Learn a wide variety of modern outdoor survival skills in our 2-day Wilderness Survival class!
We’ve been offering this class for over 25 years and it a top recommendation for all outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re a day-hiker, backpacker, adventurer, or you just want to be more comfortable in the woods - this two day class will teach you all the foundational and intermediate skills and knowledge that you would need to be self-reliant in the outdoors using a small amount of modern outdoor equipment.
This hands-on class is held entirely outside at our private woodland training ground. You have the option to do the full two days of training (and camp onsite overnight) or you can take the first day of class as a stand-alone training - the Modern Survival Crash Course (9 am to 5 pm, $149 per student).
In the Modern Survival Crash Course/first day of the 2-day Wilderness Survival class you will:
Discover the priorities of survival, both mental and physical
Learn some critical knots and build a tarp shelter
Find out how to safely collect and purify water with several easy methods
Make fire in many ways, including optics and spark rods
Create effective ways to signal for help
In the second day of the 2-day Wilderness Survival class you will:
Discover nutritious wild edibles that you will see throughout the region
Fabricate animal lethal traps (no animals will be harmed in the class)
Explore the practical components of survival kits
Learn strategies to avoid getting lost in the first place
Try new camp skills and top survival tricks, like sharpening your knife on a rock and more!
This second day will run from 9 am to 4 pm and it is not available by itself, you’ll need to enroll in the 2-day class to join this class segment.
Course Location: Held at our home location near Hartwood. Va. Detailed directions are emailed upon enrollment.
Required Equipment: Food and drinks for yourself for two days, appropriate clothing and wet weather gear for the expected weather, a knife (fixed blade preferred), a tarp for shelter (6x8 or 8x10 feet, or some similar size), 100 feet of cord, sleeping bag and a pen to take notes.
Recommended Equipment: Some seating is available at camp, but please bring a camp chair if you have one. Personal camping gear like tents, stoves, lights and other gear are welcomed and encouraged.
